L.A Requiem - Object Design

Object Design (Material and Light) is a practical subject undertaken through my Design Computing degree. In this subject we were encouraged to explore diverse materials and fabrication techniques with the aim of building a pedestal lamp. We developed manufacturing and artisan skills to manipulate shapes and colour. The final design was inspired by Judith Neilson’s ‘Indigo Slam’. Indigo Slam is also also a novel by Robert Crais, its literary sequel is titled L.A Requiem. The projects name is a nod to the muse’s origins. My project is currently being held on display in the Wilkinson Building at The University of Sydney. Photos will be updated upon its return.

L.A Requiem is named as the sequel of Indigo Slam. Much like its predecessor the structure peels and folds. Similar to the intentions William Smart had with Indigo Slam it fills space with light and holds a solid formation with a weightless and effortless aura.

The lamps base is a thick union of 361 blocks of silver ash. The shades are then made of acrylic formed around peeling and folding curves with a linen cover. LED’s are placed underneath the linen shades and bounce off the curves to accentuate the shape and fill empty space with light.

L.A. Requiem has used the architectural form of Indigo Slam but has transformed its purpose. It takes the ideas of the building and allows them to be placed in the home. Lighting is no longer just functional but also architectural.
